THE ART OF LIFE DRAWING - 4 of 4

Hatching + Ink + Wet media

Saturday October 9th, 2021

10:30am - 4:30pm

Tewantin Uniting Church Hall

with Halina Paterson

This last of four Life Drawing workshops will focus on  hatching in its many forms -

…simple, cross, directional, random ... using different mediums.

You can also learn to hatch with ink,  where different thicknesses portray the tone with the tone of the pen modelling the form rather than the different styles of hatching.

In the afternoon with the model, water media will be taught using ink washes with black water-soluble pens as the teaching medium.  You are welcome to bring any water soluble medium you have for help with it or information about it, or to use on the day.   for example water soluble graphite pencils or blocks,  liquid charcoal, inktense blocks, watercolour pencils and any other water media you would like to bring.   Appropriate surfaces for water media will be discussed but for the workshop the cartridge paper 80gsm or 110gsm in a sketchbook will be suitable

Being the last of a series of four Life Drawing Workshops, we will be putting it all together.  This is  to help you be able to make different choices from what you might have done four months earlier with a conscious choice of which tools or techniques to use.   We will also learn some general artistic compositional guidelines, which can involve placement, tonal pathways, absences and accentuations,  in an overall composition.

Materials list:

Morning: Graphite pencils 2B, 4B and softer.  I will be demonstrating and using mostly a 6B graphite pencil.    Minimum size A3 sketchbook, any surface is suitable.    Erasers optional lol.

Afternoon:  The simplest way to carry wet media to life drawing is in the form of a water soluble pen.   The ones I use mostly are Tombow with a fine end and a brush end as well as a Tombow calligraphy pen that is not watersoluble for reasons I will explain on the day.   This is the minimum requirement.    So that everyone has tools that perform well I can order these for you to save you searching, but they need to be ordered at least 3 weeks before the workshop date.  The cost of both is $15 which you can give me on the day.   If you would like to have a go at the non watersoluble hatched example attached you will need four Artline fine liners, .01  .3  .5  ..8.

Cost for the day is $95 which includes morning and afternoon tea and a healthy gluten free lunch.  Fimal payment directly into the account below is required at least a week beforehand.   This gives relaxed time before the workshop to have a chat and a cuppa.

Arrive 10am for a 10.30am start.

Feedback from last year’s workshop 4 of 4

Really enjoyable and learnt a lot. Loved it!

Great experience. Very inspiring and learnt a lot about materials and technique.

It was great to do so much in such a short time.

Enjoyable, fun, frustrating.

Wow! the difference between my first drawing and one only a short time later.

Thank you for your expertise and inspiration.

Huge thank you for such a fabulous day of art making.

I found your teaching both inspiritng and informative.

Interesting, learning new media.

Very interesting. I learnt a lot thank you.

The positive feedback was encouraging.

Very organised and an amazing artist. Well done.

Great! I'd like to have attended earlier workshops.

My favourite to date because of the colour.

Fun! Halina is inspiring. Not enough time.

Love the examples. Thanks

Halina’s life-drawing classes are instructive and very informative covering many different methods
with lots of examples to follow, teaching how to ‘see’ the subject. As a model, I got to listen and
observe as Halina clearly sets the class task then makes sure she spends focused time with each of
the artists, ensuring they get a good grasp of all mediums, techniques and tools to take away from
the workshop.
