THE ART OF LIFE DRAWING - 3 of 4

Reductive drawing and Foreshortening

Saturday July 17th, 2021

9.45am - 3.45pm

Curra Community Hall, Gympie

with Halina Paterson

In the third workshop we will be focusing on

finding and accentuating lights and sometimes darks, learning reductive drawing in the morning.

This will draw (nice pun!) on what was learnt in Workshop 1 with a difference which will involve changing your brain... again lol.

In the afternoon the model will be in only foreshortened poses.  You will be learning more   measuring and sighting  tools as well as rendering in charcoal, graphite, conte, and pastel.

This workshop brings together all the observation practice of the first two workshops as well as learning new measuring tools for foreshortening and different rendering methods.    By putting it all together you are more in a position to choose a method of depicting the particular pose you see in front of you at any time to best portray its dominant features, or features of your choice.  For example you now have a set of  tools that allows you to ask yourself the question " How would this pose look best?    Would it look better as a negatively rendered work, or a minimal line drawing , or a continuous contour line...or.... or  "..

Halina has a thorough knowledge and experience of the techniques and has won prizes for her drawings.   Her classes and workshops are informative and thorough.

As well as learning a lot you are very likely to have fun.

Materials needed are all those from the first workshop (willow charcoal, conte, sketchbook) a graphite pencil 2B or softer (4,6,8), a charcoal pencil or long charcoal pieces and anything else you have that can draw a line or block in tone.  A sketchbook minimum size A3 (one size larger than A4).   A kneadable eraser and a hard 'normal' eraser. Tortillions.  A small soft cloth, piece of a t-shirt for example.

Cost for the day is $95 which includes morning and afternoon tea and a healthy gluten free lunch.

Final payment directly into the account below is required at least a week beforehand.   This gives relaxed time before the workshop to have a chat and a cuppa.

Arrive 10am for a 10.30am start.

Here is what participants of this workshop last year had to say…

Great! Very enjoyable learning the techniques for today.

Good learning to do things differently and learning different tools.

Interesting. I have much more I need to do. Good meeting with people who have same interests.

Very enjoyable and learnt a lot about tone and charcoal and equipment use.

More relaxing today and time to work on drawings.
Reductive drawing is very satisfying .

Fun. Challenging. Liked reductive concepts.

Very enlightening.

Great fun! Relaxing. I feel like I am getting it all together.

Great day learning new techniques and meeting like minded people. Always have a wonderful time if Halina is involved. Amazing artist and teacher.

From the model: Such a lovely atmosphere, everyone familiar with each other now . Perfect for the vulnerable learning space that today’ s lesson was about. Brainy undoing. Loved listening to all the tuition tips and hearing people learn and awaken.
